Rodney “Hot Rod” Jones, 27 years old, 130 pounds who turned pro last
year evened his pro record at 2-2-2 on April 2, 2004 with a well-earned,
four-round unanimous decision over Luiz Lopez (1-2) of North Bergen, NJ.
Lopez pleaded for Jones to brawl with him but Jones stayed with his
outside game plan and the judges agreed.
On May 21, 2004, Boxing At The ROC II, Jones had to settle for a draw
after four tough rounds against Dave Drouin of Montreal in which the
crowd believed he won. Jones had knocked Drouin to the mat in the first
round but was penalized for pushing and it cost him the decision. “He
took a point from me, that’s what made the fight a draw,” said Jones.
Jones was born in South Carolina and has been boxing in Rochester, NY
since age 11. He is trained by Robert Johnson and Charles Murray. He has
compiled an amateur record of 57 wins and 7 losses. His victories
include metals in the Junior Silver Gloves and the Junior Olympics. He
also received a gold metal in the 2002 Empire State Games.
Jones a 1995 graduate of East High School states, “My boxing skills are
sharp and sweet. I’m an outside fighter mostly but I can mix it up with
a fighter on the inside.” He wants Rochester to know if, “they keep
coming out, he’ll keep doing his thing.”
